Mūrnieku iela

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

Nearly untouched by gentrification, Mūrnieku iela - Masons' Street - remains authentically working-class, both in its architecture and its residents. It still retains the romance of a bygone era and has some of the best wooden architecture in town. The spirit of this street is strengthened by the presence of reconstructed buildings in some of the courtyards and of creative collectives like the Purpurs paper design workshop.

A walk here won't be complete until you take in the unusual corner of Mūrnieku iela and Matīsa iela. The courtyard at Mūrnieku iela 3 has been restored by its residents. The sculpture "The Mason and the Chimney Sweep" (Mūrnieks un skursteņslauķis) is popular with newlyweds as a background for wedding photographs.

The other end of the street also retains a unique aura. The city's quiet and unofficial red light district is located around the corner, as is St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Svētā Pāvila ev. luterāņu baznīca), which watches over the neighbourhood.
