Housed in a former 19th-century engine warehouse and repair shop, the Latvian Railway History Museum also hosts a variety of cultural events, including film screenings, concerts, and exhibitions.
From an improvised train platform, one enters a reconstructed waiting room and can explore the station-master's and ticket-sellers' premises. One may also inspect a number of diesel and electric locomotives, along with a 1930s passenger car and a car used by the Soviet regime to transport prisoners.
Carefully chosen photographs and postcards reveal the history of Latvia's railways, from the architecture of train stations that have since vanished to the life of railroad workers. Uniforms, tickets, tools and other interesting items from the past add a lively feel to the exhibit.
