Vilhelms Purvītis laid the foundation for Latvian landscape painting and is perhaps Latvia's best known and most popular painter. He founded the Art Academy of Latvia and was its first rector, served as director of the National Museum of Art and acted as the commissioner of all international fine arts exhibitions between the wars.
As a youth, Purvītis studied landscape painting in St. Petersburg, Russia and graduated from the city's art academy with a gold medal in 1897. He swiftly gained fame across Europe as a master of snowscapes. His depictions of the Latvian landscape have left an indelible mark on how Latvians see it, even today. Three of his paintings - The Waters of Spring, Winter and Springtime - are integral to the canon and on permanent display at the Latvian National Museum of Art.
