Birojnīca (the Office)

In other parts of Europe and North America, the idea of combining a café or a bookstore with office services is nothing new. The first such establishment in Riga, called Birojnīca (a combination of the words Birojs [office] and kafejnīca [café]), was opened only in 2011. It has since expanded to three other locations and there are plans to conquer other Latvian cities. To become a Birojnīca member, one must purchase a daily, weekly or monthly pass, which makes it possible to sit at a separate table and use the Wi-Fi, printer, pencils and paper. The pass also allows one to use the meeting room and drink free coffee, tea and water, plus receive a 10% discount on other on-site products. The first location opened at the Satori bookstore and reading room in the Berga Bazārs, while the next two (which were chosen by popular vote on Facebook) opened at the Pērle (Pearl) retro shop, café and bar and at the MiiT cycling centre/café.
