Fazenda bazārs

Idyllic country-style cooking in the heart of the city – in the chaos of this technological age, this is nothing less than bliss. Perhaps it is the nostalgic romanticism of times past that has made Fazenda bazārs a favourite of Rigans when they feel the need to slow the down their daily frantic pace to a more tranquil state. The atmosphere here is that of an old family home, one in which the hearth has never gone cold (and just a few modern pieces of furniture or design elements indicate that time has indeed moved forward). There are two Fazenda bazārs restaurants in Riga – one is at Baznīcas iela 14, in one of the rare wooden buildings left in the overwhelmingly brick and concrete city centre. The other is in Pārdaugava – on the left bank of the Daugava River. This one is also in a charming old wooden house, the accumulated layers left by past inhabitants having been peeled away to reveal the original wood walls and stonework. In this peaceful place on the outskirts of the city, homemade pastries, cookies and cakes are baked, fresh fruit and vegetable juices are squeezed, wine is poured, and the sincere waitstaff serve meals made from the best locally-grown ingredients.
