Vīnoga

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

Vīnoga - meaning "grape" in Latvian - is a great reason to cross the Daugava River and to explore Riga's left bank. This small restaurant is located in the Āgenskalns neighbourhood of the part of the city that is called Pārdaugava ("across the Daugava"). Ensconced in a small, 18th-century, wooden building only about fifty paces from the Āgenskalns market, Vīnoga encapsulates the charms of this "other Riga."
The bustle of the city is not felt inside the restaurant, which has something of a country feel to it. The interior's slightly kitschy, ethnic motifs are dominated by wood and the atmosphere is that of placid, home life. Sitting in the window, you can watch the Number Two streetcar rattle slowly by.
The menu here is extensive - from beef tongue salad to Thai soups. There is a broad selection for both parochial and exotic tastes, all of it quite delicious. The restaurant's wine list is also vast, with vintages you might not expect to find in such a cosy place, and best of all, the prices for both food and drink are better than reasonable. The clientele is composed of locals and those in the know.
