Rāma vegetarian cafeteria

Rāma is one of the few entirely vegetarian establishments in town. Famed for its buckwheat burger, lunchtime draws a very diverse crowd. Found in the Krishna Consciousness Centre, there are no frills at Rāma - people come here for the tasty food.

Rāma offers a classical range of Indian cuisine - from Bengali sabji and paneer to kichari and paradh - as well as home-baked, yeast-free bread with olive oil and rosemary.

The prices are quite reasonable, with an average lunch going for about 3 lats. Those with a sweet tooth can order delicious but healthy cakes for dessert.

Rāma also runs a soup kitchen that is a mainstay among Riga charities, having been in operation for two decades now.

In the basement, a small shop called Hanuman offers a surprisingly vast assortment of environmentally friendly cleaning products, natural cosmetics (from hair colour to bath oils), toothpastes, teas and spices, incense, silk scarves, gifts and small things for the home. There are books and CDs as well as a broad selection of food, from soy substitutes to ghee and organic cakes.
