Located only 14 km from the Old Town, in the Mārupe suburb of Riga, the Zirgzandales horseback riding centre provides a radical change of scene for those who have spent the day working in the city. Here one enters a genuinely rural setting, which one can enjoy either on horseback, sleigh or carriage.
Those with little or no riding experience can receive lessons from the centre's trained staff and learn how to become proficient riders. The centre's owner, Sandra Zaiceva, says that from what she has seen, horseback riding can work wonders as a therapy for both the mind and body. A surprisingly wide range of people, from politicians and bankers to artists, musicians and plain, ordinary folk, have become hooked on horseback riding at the centre.
Zirgzandales offers horseback riding excursions to the swamps and peat bogs of Mārupe and Olaine, which are home to the largest colony of migrating cranes in the Riga area. Chances are that you may also spot some of the local wildlife along the way, which include deer, fox, rabbit and wild boar.
One can also take a closer look at the most recent housing developments in Mārupe, stop and explore a four-storey, former Soviet army underground bunker, and ride around the wooded perimeter of the Riga International Airport. During the summertime, one can take a refreshing dip on horseback in any one of the nearby bodies of water, and even take night-time, romantic excursions on moonlit evenings.
