Muziekgebouw aan't IJ

Author: Anothertravelguide.com1 COMMENT

Muziekgebouw aan't IJ, the new Amsterdam concert hall was opened in 2005 and is located in the Eastern Docklands (see above), not far from the Amsterdam Conservatoire, the Fifteen Amsterdam restaurant, 11 Club, Stedelij Museum CS and, a bit further back in the direction of the city centre, NeMo. The building is facing the Central Railway Station and easily noticed from afar. The building consists of two separate elements, Ijsbreker and Bimhuis that look conjoined by a staircase. The first is the venue of all the main events, the other, a bit like a black box on legs, is the place where jazz concerts and jam sessions take place. The most characteristic thing about Muziekgebouw aan't IJ is an almost physically tangible transparency. It seems that two parallel lives are going on simultaneously: one of them in the glass box of the concert hall, the other - outside. The deck-like wood floor is a reminder that it is a waterfront building. The first floor houses the Star Ferry plank floor reminds of a sun-bleached quay deck. In the evening this is the place to enjoy one of the most breathtaking sunsets in Amsterdam.

I absolutely LOVE Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ!
Next to the amazing architecture and great restaurant (that view is stunning), they really offer an incredible selection of the finest contemporary music (I noticed their programming, it's really special). We went there after a long day of sightseeing the city, and it truly was a perfect ending of the evening.
Great venue, great location, great people, great food & great music...we couldn't have asked for more! We really recommend it!
