There are always visitors queuing outside the museum. Most people will have heard the story of the jewish teenage girl called Anne Frank: during the World War II this house at 263 Prinsengracht was her and her family's hiding place. They spent twenty-six months in a special secret annex with an entrance concealed behind a moveable bookcase, and during this period the young Anne was writing her diary. In 1944 their secret was discovered; the family was separated and sent to different concentration camps. Anne died in 1945; the diary was found by her father Otto, the only member of the Frank family who survived the war. It was published in 1957. The interior of the house has been renovated to recreate the original look and feel; the diary, original photographs and authentic objects from the period are on display here, creating a genuine and deeply emotional atmosphere.
