Lloyd Hotel

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

First of all we have to mention the location: the Lloyd Hotel is situated in the stylish and still rapidly growing Eastern Docklands. It was built in 1921 to meet the needs of the Royal Holland Lloyd shipping company as a hotel for emigrants - for those who were on their way to America. During the World War II the building served as prison for those opposing the occupation regime; after the war - for Nazi prisoners. Eventually it was turned into a prison for juvenile delinquents but in the 1970s converted into a building of artist studios. Since 2004 the building houses a hotel and a cultural centre. The interior was designed by MVRDV architects. Each of the 116 rooms is different and all of them are rated on the scale from one to five - that's not to say that staying in a single-star room is a budget version in the classical sense. One-star rooms are simply closer to the past of the building: smaller, equipped with modest-size beds and (some of them) no en-suite bathrooms. A five-star room may surprise you with a piano and a Van Lieshout glass fibre bathroom. You would do well to stick to the middle ground but there is plenty of style and excellent service in any room, regardless of how much you are paying for it. The cultural centre includes an excellent library (lent by Rietveld Academy) and full information on all the latest cultural events in Amsterdam. The hotel also houses the Snel restaurant with cuisine best described as simple and natural. The gastronomic philosophy of Snel is laconic: "A perfect tomato has no need for anything to emphasise its flavour." The interior is somewhat puzzling, though, with its little kindergarten-style tables and chairs.
The Lloyd Hotel is a 15-20 minute ride by bike, 15 minute drive by cable-car and 10 minute drive by taxi from the city centre.

Double room EUR 80 - 295.
