La Place

A self service restaurant or a huge food market next to the V&D department store, in the very centre of Amsterdam. Everything is fresh and prepared right in front of you; just take whatever you want (and as much as you want), go upstairs, pick a table and then try to polish off all the stuff you have heaped on your plate. The dining hall has a glass roof, a clever way of conjoining two separate buildings. You can choose a table to suit your mood (unless the place is full): to feel like you were having lunch at a market place or to enjoy a more intimate meal sitting on a sofa in a half-hidden alcove. A nice place for a morning cup of coffee, glass of fresh orange juice and salad in an easy and relaxed atmosphere. Or perhaps you will feel like some oysters (seriously cheaper than anywhere else). This is a simple, unpretentious sort of place, an ideal compromise of killing your hunger and saving time (and money) at the same time. You will have to clear the table afterwards, though.
Two coffees, a bottle of wine, bread, two salads, six oysters: approximately EUR 28.
