De Taart van m'n Tante

A totally gaga sort of "cakery", the ultimate kitsch experience - located in the fashionable Pijp neighbourhood next door to a stylish urban street style store. The shop windows are full of pastries designed like children's picture books or 1950s retro greeting cards: cakes with dancing little girls, edible dresses etc. Decorative chairs with prints of cakes and coffee beans - each one is different -, pink walls, red and white chequered napkins and tablecloths that seem to have come out of an elderly auntie's hope chest. In fact, contrary to the implication in the name of the pastry shop, no aunties of any sort have anything to do with the business; the owners are two guys, Siemon de Jong and Noam Offer. Their cakes have been exhibited in museums and filmed in movies, not to mention being served at posh parties and artsy get-togethers. In 2004 in addition to the cake place the Cake under My Pillow B&B was opened offering accommodation in one of the three rooms (approximately EUR 110 a night). The only thing worth bearing in mind as you give in to the sweet madness is the fact that this is one of the very few places in Amsterdam where credit cards are not accepted. Pastries: on the average EUR 2.20 - 5.
