Mazzo

Mazzo is the brainchild of IQ, one of Amsterdam's best-known creative groups. Located in what was once a popular discotheque, its monumental, light-emitting restaurant logo could be seen as a reflection of this recent history. The premises are quite spacious and the brick and concrete interior is an experience in itself (Concrete Architects Amsterdam). Housed in a classical Amsterdam building, the entrance is somewhat narrow, with the interconnected rooms extending inward as if into the belly of an animal. The ceilings in each room differ in height, a feature that serves to organically separate the bar, restaurant and the kitchen. The restaurant sports a laid-back, stout, tavern-style atmosphere, with five huge lamps - Dear Ingo spiders from the MOOOI collection - serving as the main interior elements, along with four gigantic black-and-white photo portraits of people of different ages showing their passion for food. Like the unpretentious concrete, steel, stone and pine-tree wood materials used for the interior, the menu is also straightforward. Dominated by elements of Italian cuisine, the dishes on offer are quite reasonably priced.
