Wilanów Palace is one of the most notable Polish Baroque monuments. The palace was built for the Polish king John III Sobieski in the late 17th century, and combines traits of the traditional Polish nobility building style, Italian country villas and French château architecture. The palace interiors with their original design and decadent furnishings represent three different styles: the royal Baroque apartments are in the main building, while the south and north wings are decorated with 18th- and 19th-century furnishings respectively. The museum was set up in the Palace in 1805; the Crimson Hall, the Etruscan Room and the Lapidarium are part of the museum, as is the Polish Portrait Gallery, which is located on the ground floor and holds a collection of portraits of kings, noblemen and various culture figures from the 16th-19th century. The intriguing two-level garden is often called the "frame" of the Palace: it is a stylish and harmonious mixture of assorted characteristics of the Baroque garden, the Anglo-Chinese romantic park, the English landscape park and the Neo-Renaissance rose garden.
