WARSAW HISTORY MUSEUM

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

This museum is possibly the best place to start getting acquainted with Warsaw - besides a better understanding of why Warsaw is now the way it is, it will provide an insight into the history of the Polish nation in general. The museum, founded in 1936, is located in the very centre of the Old Town, and is spread out over 11 buildings. The foundations of the collection were put in place in the late 18th century, with acquisitions reaching their peak in the 19th century when the collection received additions from various societies, city and art institutions and universities. Although much of the collection perished during WWII, it was gradually restored with the aid of donations and contributions, and in 1965 the museum reopened with an extensive exhibit, The Seven Centuries of Warsaw, which explores the rich and dramatic history of the city from early 14th century to modern day. The museum also runs a research centre, conservation-restoration labs, a library and a movie theatre.
