Eleven

Eleven is currently the Lisbon restaurant Nr 1; it has everything: great kitchen, design, location and even an exciting history. Opened just a year ago, it is also the only restaurant in Lisbon boasting a Michelin star (awarded last November). The story of Eleven goes like this: the spot (on the top of the Eduardo VII Park where the whole city is at your feet) was coveted by the Hilton hotel chain giant; a group of influential Portuguese decided to prevent that. The product of this protest is the Eleven Restaurant, and it was given this name to signify the number of its owners. One of them is the German-born chef Joachim Koerper, owner of two Michelin stars: his markedly modern Mediterranean cuisine is still unequalled in Lisbon. The restaurant is housed in a two-storey building the main element of design of which is the impressive windows; the interior design is quite modern and complemented by the expensive-looking tablecloths, silver tableware and works by contemporary Portuguese artists. It is not lacking in a little something that makes it special, either - like the brass washbowls instead of sinks and the magazine stack next to the toilet in the WC. And, as you sit at your table and watch the sunset-engulfed city at your feet, you think: thank goodness and the eleven brave souls who thwarted the silly plan to build another Hilton here, where the view is a dessert in its own right...
