Artists, writers, painters and musicians, in other words, the progressive-minded part of the Moscow youth - these are the social circles that have chosen the HLAM restaurant/bar/club as their latest hangout. (The name of the establishment, a Russian acronym that stands for Artists, Writers, Actors, Musicians, is, as likely as not, a nod to the bohemian club/café popular in the 1920s Kiev and frequented by the likes of Bulgakov, Ehrenburg and Mandelstam; it is also a play on the Russian word meaning "trash".) No sign above the door - this place is strictly for those in the know.
HLAM is located a stone's throw from the Bon restaurant, Philippe Starck's pet project, and one can't help thinking the crazy charm of the French designer's masterpiece has rubbed off on the creators of the interior of the HLAM club who seem to have gone completely and utterly gaga! The ceiling is literally drowning in gold, the walls are papered in silk and you are not likely to miss the black and slightly weird-looking pillars scattered in the room. There is definitely no shortage of glitter and theatrics. The shocking eclecticism is walking the razor's edge, and it is only the toughest of customers who won't find it at least slightly over the top. One thing you shouldn't expect to find here is a gourmet's feast; you will be served decent international cuisine instead. You don't go to HLAM to eat or dance, you go there to meet people. And what a lovely crowd it is! Besides, the restaurant is open 24/7 and the pricelist - compared to those of most eateries in Moscow - is genuinely friendly.
