Hotel Rossi

The 2007-opened Hotel Rossi on the bank of the Fontanka River positions itself as a boutique hotel, one of the very few in St Petersburg. It overlooks the Lomonosov Square (Ploshchad Lomonosova) lined with buildings designed by the Italian Neo-Classicist architect Carlo Rossi - hence the name. The hotel with its 28 rooms doubles as an art gallery: passages and rooms are decorated with paintings by artists from St Petersburg, all of them for sale. The interior is quite eclectic in its attempt to balance an illusion of historic authenticity with contemporary luxury; sadly, it does not quite hit either mark. Perhaps the most consistent are the Grand Suite and deluxe rooms on the fifth floor of the hotel building - they are comparatively spacious, style-wise more contemporary and conceptually more convincing. Considering the usual St Petersburg prices, the hotel's rates (from RUR 4950 for a night), quality and location (The Hermitage Museum, Russian Museum and Saint Isaac's Cathedral are all in a walking distance) are well matched indeed.
