Kempinsky Hotel Moika 22

The greatest asset of Kempinsky Hotel Moika 22 must be its location - it doesn't get any better than that: just opposite the hermitage Museum and a three-minute walk from Dvortsovaya Naberezhnaya, on the very bank of the Moika canal, in a historic 1853 building designed by the Dutch architect Basil von Witte who worked during the reign of Nikolai I. Admittedly, the façade is the only part of the building that has survived in its original magnificence, surreally mirrored by the waters of Moika. The rest has been built from a scratch, including the lobby atrium with its glass roof, a somewhat eclectic attempt of combining history with a vision of contemporary luxury. As it happens with chain hotels, the room decor is somewhat impersonal. It does feature all the compulsory attributes of five-star comfort - but no more than that. Excellent breakfast: Kempinski is provided with croissants and buns by Boulangerie Garçon, well known in St Petersburg, and the pastry is mouth-wateringly good. There is another plus side to the hotel: its rooftop bar and terrace which offers one of the most splendid panoramic (almost 360˚) views of St Petersburg. Even if you are not staying at the hotel, it is worth visiting for the view alone.
