Hotel Astoria

Excellent atmosphere - a genuine magic of long-gone days covers everything like a patina, and it makes itself felt as soon as you set foot inside the lobby. If you can afford it - do stay at Hotel Astoria, arguably the best luxury hotel in St Petersburg; if not - definitely pay it a visit and have a cup of afternoon tea with some cherry, blackberry or plum jam. Enjoy your tea and a moment of peace, leisurely watching the St Petersburg life slowly flowing past the window or admiring the next-door Saint Isaac's Cathedral. Built in 1912, Hotel Astoria is one of the symbols of St Petersburg; it was the favourite playground for Russian aristocracy and the latter-day list of guests is equally impressive: Alain Delon, Marcello Mastroianni, Luciano Pavarotti, the greats of fashion design et al. One of the Hotel Astoria legends has it that Hitler used to fancy it as the perfect venue for his grand victory celebration - allegedly, he already had the invites ready. Thank goodness, they were not destined to be delivered. Today Hotel Astoria is owned by Rocco Forte Hotels, a small yet sophisticated chain of luxury hotels which also own Hotel de Russie in Rome, Villa Kennedy in Frankfurt and Hotel de Rome in Berlin. The interior, an exquisite fusion of history and modern luxury, was designed by Rocco Forte's sister Olga Polizzi.
