Sadko (Russian Cuisine)

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

Sadko, belonging to Probka restaurant group, is a perfect representative of Russian cuisine. Located just opposite the Mariinsky Theatre, it's a great pre- or post-concert meeting spot, its kitchen being opened until 11:30p.m. This popular and stylish dining venue has managed to avoid a folksy, Slavic kitsch, so typical to many other Russian restaurants. No pseudo-bearskins, baranki or old brass samovars. No loud music and intrusive service. The 19th century building features high, vaulted ceilings and modest, anthracite-gray walls, painted with tasteful red and golden traditional style flowers. Red crystal chandeliers, like huge blossoms stand out on the otherwise minimalistic background. Even plates are decorated with traditional patterns.
Its creative cuisine with a touch of European cooking is another good reason for visiting Sadko. Traditional, cold boiled beef in jelly, herring with boiled potatoes, beef stroganov, cutlet "Pozharskie" (from chicken and veal), Russian "vinaigrette" salad, an assortments of pickles, and an excellent wine list. Aside from pricy French vintages, Sadko offers very good New World wines from Chile and Argentina, for example. The chosen wine can be ordered in 150ml, 250ml and 500ml decanters, too. The restaurant serves plentiful portions for friendly prices - a nice dinner for three, including wine, would cost about 120 LVL - a real bargain for St. Petersburg!
The best part, however, is service. Young, educated, amiable and creative staff with excellent English language skill comes mainly from the nearby Conservatory Vocal Department. They busily wait tables and suddenly, putting trays aside, burst into singing! Neither on a request nor for money but just like that - in the middle of work! You can enjoy Russian folk song a cappella performance along with your meal. Isn't it fantastic?
