Backstage (Russian and International Cuisine)

Backstage (Za Stsenoy) recreates a theatre atmosphere in every detail. Old linen curtains, elegantly tied up with graceful ballet shoes...A feathery ballerina outfit on a stand...Masks, swords, shields and many more theatric props blend perfectly with fine setting of the restaurant. Interior master Andrey Dmitriev has conjured up a space, deserving ovations and amazing its guests with stunning contrasts. Even a restroom with an expensive Villeroy & Bosch water closet against a background of a crumble brick wall is not an exception.
Located a few steps from the Mariinsky Opera House, Backstage has become a favorite dining spot not only for theatergoers. You may easily encounter the originator of the Backstage idea and the prominent conductor Valery Gergiev himself there. Magnetism of this place lies in its charming, bohemian ambience. Menu, fusing Russian and European influences, is good but doesn't shine with exceptional gastronomic surprises. It is quite pricy, too. Yet its enchanting interior, a lovely view of a canal and a subtle glamour is a perfect combination, making it a good choice for pre- or post-theatre dining.
