Publica Cafe

Opened just at the end of 2009, Publica Café is one of the most intriguing newcomers on St. Petersburg's gastronomic scene. It presents a combination of two different concepts - a 1st floor fast service bistro, with food prepared right behind the counter and sandwiches served on small wooden boards and a 2nd floor, more sophisticated, restaurant. Massive wooden stairs separate two worlds that differ both in their style and a price policy (chicken soup or macaroni and meatballs at the bistro costs just 189 rubles, everything available for take away as well). Publica Café is set in former guest apartments of Lensovet Theatre. A somewhat decadent décor features light-color wood and artistic black & white photos of all possible marine creatures, adorning the walls. Cylindrical lamps set among tables give a peculiar feel of a photo studio just temporarily turned into a café, and perhaps you wouldn't be too surprised to notice there few local photo luminaries, fully geared up for a shooting session. Soft background jazz tunes emphasize its cozy, chamber-style ambiance and an authentic chandelier - carefully restored ceiling decorations.
It has to be admitted however that, for the time being, the décor and atmosphere of Publica Café surpasses its gastronomic performance by far - its prevailingly seafood cuisine lacks a touch of uniqueness and seems overly mannered at times. Yet, while in St. Petersburg, it's worth visiting it anyway.
