Set Portes

Set Portes

This is the oldest and most legendary of Barcelona restaurants (founded in 1836) and listed in all tourist guide-books - which does not detract from its value in any way. Unless, of course, you mind dining at the same place where Picasso, Marquez and Hemingway used to break bread and where everyone and their grandmother turn up just to take a good look at the place where Che Guevara and Orson Welles did the same. The menu is so impressive it makes you lose your head: Set Portes is still one of the few places in the city where you can sample an authentic top quality Catalan cuisine. There are white tablecloths on the tables and at least five waiters see to you during a single meal, and yet the ambience is democratic and so are the prices. And the best news is: this is one of the very few places in Barcelona that are open from 1 pm to 1 am. $$

Just a small yet important correction to the blurb about Set Portes, it is in fact not the oldest restaurant in Barcelona, that honour goes to the restaurant Can Culleretes, which was founded in 1786 and is also the second oldest restaurant in Spain, although I must admit, the food is better in Set Portes. As a matter of interest, the oldest is the Botin restuarant in Madrid, founded 1725.
