Opened in 1992, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is housed in a former hospital building. Spacious corridors and wards are perfect for presenting art work. The museum collection comprises the 20th century Spanish and foreign painters, revealing the prevailing art trends of the time. It presents brilliant canvases of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, the most famous ones being Picasso's „Guernica", closely followed by "The Great Masturbator" of Dalí. The museum features works of several other excellent Spanish artists, the most outstanding being „Portrait of Josette" by Juan Gris, „Man with a Pipe" by Joan Miró and "Paja prensada a la X" by Antoni Tàpies. Aside from Spanish art, it presents Max Ernst, Rrene Magritte, Yves Tanguy, Vasily Kandinsky, Man Rey, Yves Klein, Henry Moore and many more. "The Tumbling Figure" by Francis Bacon is another gem of the museum (displayed at the room 24, the 4th floor).
The new extension, designed by the world-renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, opened in September 2005, added about half as much exhibition space to the already existing museum.
