The holdings of the National Museum of Art is based on its collection of Old Masters' painting and a collection of sculpture, graphic art, design and applied arts spanning several centuries, from the Middle ages to 1900. Founded in 1792 as the Royal Museum, its original collection was created by the King Gustav III and Count Carl Gustaf Tessin. The central building is located in the peninsula of Blasieholmen in central Stockholm. The collection of paintings mostly comprises works by the Swedish artists of the 18th and 19th centuries; however, Dutch 17th-century painting is also well represented. The museum's collection of French 18th-century painting is considered to be one of the best worldwide. Interesting works by the French 19th-century artists - Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas and Paul Gauguin - are also on view. The rich collection of design and applied art spans the centuries between the 14th century and the present day, comprising ceramics, textiles, glass art, metal art, furniture design, books, etc. from Scandinavia and other European countries. Other possessions of the museum include a collection of drawings and graphic art, the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Castles Collection and the Gustavsberg Porcelain Collection. The museum regularly hosts various large-scale art exhibitions.
