Nordiska museet / Nordic Museum

Located in the Island of Djurgården, the Nordic museum is dedicated to Swedish cultural history and ethnography from the early 1500s to the present day. The museum was founded in the late 1800s by the educator Artur Hazelius who built the collection based on purchases and donations from Sweden and other Nordic countries. While the founder was mostly interested in the culture of the Swedish peasantry - furniture, clothing, toys - his successors started to collect objects which also represent the lifestyle of city dwellers and the bourgeoisie. The museum is currently housed in a 1907 building by the Swedish architect Isaac Gustaf Clason.
