Rath Museum (Musée Rath)

Founded by the Rath sisters in 1826, it is the oldest Geneva museum completely dedicated to visual arts; the museum is nicknamed the Temple of Muses, and even the design of the building betrays certain pretensions to „high culture", combining French taste and Italian style. The permanent exhibition comprises both classics of Swiss art and works by foreign masters; however, what attracts the most interest, is the temporary exhibitions, both themed and solo shows, held at the museum on a regular basis. While the priorities of themed exhibitions are archaeology and antique art, the solo shows and retrospectives mostly feature the very latest developments in contemporary art.
