Schweizerisches Landesmuseum/The Swiss National Museum

This is definitely one of the more captivating museums in Switzerland, providing a broad and truly interesting look at the nation's rich cultural and historical legacy, from pre-history to the present. The museum was built and established in 1898, in honour of the 50-year anniversary of the federal constitution; at the time, it already brought attention to itself with its medieval “fairy-tale” facade. Several permanent exhibitions make up the museum's content. “The History of Switzerland” section is divided into four thematic divisions: migration and the formation of settlements, religious and intellectual history, political history, and national economic development. The curators have devised interesting ways for visitors to learn about subjects such as: the formation of this unique country, important people in its history, the famous Swiss chocolate, watch-making, the Alpine background of various winter sports, and eminent people who emigrated to Switzerland.
