Freitag

Worth a go-see is the Freitag shop on Geroldstrasse. Freitag is both a brand and shop chain that makes and sells bags and accessories from recycled materials. This, their flagship store, is quite impressive – made completely from rusty freight containers, it soars up from between two international railway lines and a highway overpass. The building comes up just under Zurich's imposed height limit for structures, making the 26-metre tower – made entirely from 19 freight containers brought by rail from Hamburg – a bona-fide “skyscraper” by Zurich's standards!

Freitag is the brainchild of two brothers who came to the realization that there's a lot of useable material left over from cars and lorries that are marked for disposal – such as rubber from the tires, and the tarpaulins used to cover the freight containers when being hauled. Freitag shops and merchandise dealers can now be found around the world, with special design models featured in the collection of New York's MoMA, and as one would expect, in Zurich's Museum of Design as well.
