Grand Hotel de Londres

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

Restored of necessity from time to time but unadulterated since its opening in 1892, perfectly placed in the heart of the old embassy district of Pera (Beyoğlu), the Londres is a cult hotel for the traveller with inside knowledge. The owners, of Arab descent, have kept the true spirit of the hotel alive; visitors step back into the age of the Orient Express and fin-de-siècle intrigue when they enter the grand entrance lobby. Today, local characters, musicians and artists can be spotted enjoying a drink at the same bar where Ernest Hemingway and his friends held court in the dying days of the Ottoman Empire. The old flocked walls hold more secrets of spies and diplomats than can be imagined.
The chandeliers, dark wood panelling and perfectly running old ironwork lift complete the picture and it is easy to miss the terrace, a tranquil oasis in a crowded part of town increasingly taken over by more "minimalist" styles. Take the time to unwind with a cocktail high over the minaret-speckled cityscape of Istanbul and the city's most breathtaking secret of all - sunset, over the Golden Horn.
Not all the rooms have a view, and each is quite different from the other in the way of old buildings. Stay here if you have a weakness for nostalgia with some old style romance and adventure, and be advised to request a larger room. Prices vary widely from about €40 to $200 a night, but every room holds a piece of the history of the city, with original fixtures and fittings. Don't expect stellar service - the pace of life at The Londres will not be rushed. But for the adventurous romantic - perfection!
