Blakes

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

Blakes is a very special place: the name rings a bell to every - or almost every - Londoner. The hotel is an original project by Anouska Hempel a.k.a. Lady Weinberg, a well-known figure on the London hotel scene. Blakes, opened in the 1980s in a classic Victorian building, was the first ever job for the New Zealand-born actress as an interior designer - and also the first small luxury hotel in London. The décor is dominated by unbridled maximalism and feel of an authentic boudoir: Venetian chandeliers, tuberose fragrance, Oriental accents and interior objects picked up by Hempel during her numerous travels. Blakes hasn't lost any of its original popularity since the opening day; it is still one of the most romantic hotels in London - God's gift to middle aged men arranging secret trysts with their young lovers. The restaurant, however, is worth a special mention: creative cuisine with an Oriental accent; outstanding presentation. Each item of the menu is served in a special dish; even the colour and shape of the plate have been chosen to match the food. The experience of being served is a true adventure. You are attended to by two or three waiters at the same time. Imagine two different sauces being poured simultaneously on your plate from two silver sauceboats: one of them is white coconut, the other - inky black cuttlefish sauce. Or a dessert in a dish with a glass lid propped up with a stem of lemongrass...

Rates: from GBP 323 for a double room.
