Fire and Stone

Author: Mārtiņš Rītiņš0 COMMENTS

Even though pizzerias usually aren't among the places culinary luminaries pay any attention to, Fire & Stone, opened last year at Westfield Shopping Centre, got into the spotlight almost at once. Roving along the main lane past an endless string of restaurants, suddenly a live green wall opens up on the left. There is a waterfall, surrounded by lush greenery, then few more restaurants follow one another, but at the very furthest end huge gas candles catch one's attention inviting to come closer.
The first thing you notice stepping over the Fire & Stone threshold is an open-plan kitchen and an impressive size fire-wood oven - as it turns out, the largest one in the northern hemisphere. No wonder that an appetizing smell of freshly baked pizzas fills the whole place! Fire & Stone can seat 142 guests, and a specially heated open air terrace is available whole year round. A row of small tables, bright-red leather seats and a floor-to-ceiling glass wall that separates eaters form swarming shopping area, which may seem like another world at that moment.
Although very well-attended, Fire & Stone is never crowded, as there are numerous other eateries just a few steps away. None of them, however, can measure up to it. Where else could you savor a traditional Italian pizza with typical African, Asian, Australian or Latin American flavors? Paris, London, Bombay, New York, Cairo and Casablanca are just few names of delicious Fire & Stone masterpieces. Any of its pizzas is just fantastic! Must-taste one is a sea food pizza with squid, shrimps and scallops. Home-made tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and oven-baked onions in balsamic vinegar - yummy! A half of a pizza perhaps is enough for one person, yet you'll regret that you have decided to share it with your lunch partner and cannot consume it all alone.
The menu contains some other traditional Italian foods, including pastas and salads. Moreover, prices are amazingly friendly - starting from 6.95£ per pizza. Maybe that's the reason why it attracts all sorts of people - from youngsters to old ladies with curled white hair. The restaurant has very responsive, friendly and highly professional staff - after all, the owners have gained some good experience already at the first same brand restaurant at Covent Garden.
