The National Portrait Gallery's roof-top restaurant is hidden on the 3rd floor of the Gallery's so called Ondaatje Wing. It's a perfect lunch and dinner choice if you crave for something more substantial than just light snacks, available at the first floor café. The restaurant offers fine, modern British cuisine with a slight fusion touch. Newly refurbished, it features pleasantly light and inviting ambiance, mostly achieved by the long glass wall with a superb panoramic view and functional minimalism in style. It overlooks legendary landmarks of London - Trafalgar Square, Parliament Building, the London's Eye and Big Ben, offering beautiful and romantic dining.
Although certainly standing out among many others, Portrait Restaurant's prices are pretty moderate according to London's standards. It has a separate entrance, thus you don't need to be a gallery visitor to dine there. Anothertravelguide.com suggests trying 3 courses with Portrait Bellini for £30.00, a free Bellini cocktail perhaps being another good reason for doing so. Portrait Restaurant prides excellent and substantial food with no pretentious frills, which is just the way its frequent visitors expect it to be. Mostly art dealers and art connoisseurs gather there, and random restaurant goers would hardly find it anyway.
The place is packed at Saturday lunchtimes therefore you might have to linger at the bar for a while, before getting a table. The weekend atmosphere adds a special charm to the place, while the whole London seems exuding creativity.
