The Boundary

Sir Terence Conran - the founder of Habitat and Conran Shop, designer and entrepreneur, the author of several books on design, father of the 1990s London restaurant revolution and the man who stood at the cradle of the 1989-founded London Design Museum, first of its kind ever - has long since earned the status of a legend, both in the gastronomy and design circuits. Terence Conran is 77, and the recently opened Boundary is one of his most ambitious projects to date - besides being Conran's first private enterprise in twenty years. The Boundary is an extravagant concept comprising three restaurants and bars, 17 guest rooms, a bakery and a small food store. The location, a Shoreditch Victorian warehouse conversion, is equally out. Admittedly, only the restaurant and Albion Café have opened their door so far; the roof bar and guest rooms are scheduled to be unveiled in April. The restaurant featuring a classic British and French cuisine is housed on the ground floor of the building; the rooms will be located on the first, second and fourth floor of the six-storey building. The concept promises to combine the privacy of a private home with some serious comfort worthy of a luxury hotel. The décor of each room will be individual - a tribute to a prominent design figure of its time or a trend: from Eileen Gray to Mies van der Rohe and Bauhaus. The Boundary will also double as an art gallery, exhibiting within its walls 50 works by various artists, mostly from the private collection of the Conran family. Spring 2009 will see the opening of Boundary Rooftop - a garden and a grill restaurant with 48 seats, a huge open fireplace in the centre and a 360º panoramic view of London.
