J.Sheekey is the oldest seafood restaurant in London. Originally opened by Josef Sheekey as a small oyster bar back in 1896, it boomed in the 50s and 60s of the last century, attracting fashionable folks of the city. Owned by Scott's Group, the restaurant was subsequently taken over by Caprice Holdings in 1998 and joined such London's legends like The Ivy and Le Caprice. Surrounded by West End theatres and cultural venues, it has managed to maintain the charm of the early 20th century London. The oak-wood paneled place with black & white photos of British theatre, cinema and music luminaries exudes traditional English hospitality. Not for nothing its guest list boasts such remarkable names as Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst, every night swarming with local theatre stars.
J.Sheekey new Oyster Bar, opened in November 2008, is sited right next to the main restaurant hall and has fully taken over the best traditions of its predecessor. Indeed, it leaves an impression of having lured foodies for no less than 50 years already. It offers an authentic taste of old London - excellent oysters, fine wine and perfect fish soup. There are just few tables, thus most eaters have to opt for seats at the bar with delicious sea food being prepared right in front of their eyes. Prior booking is highly advisable.
