The name of Taschen publishing house is well known among book lovers. Anyone who takes interest in art, design, traveling of fashion, perhaps has at least a couple of Taschen issues on their bookshelves. Almost any new edition of the publishing house is a happening - the same was as opening of a new store. Since the very first Taschen store, opened in Paris in 2000, their designer is Philippe Starck. And indeed, they fit together just fine - the king of coffee table books and a designer-hooligan, especially since décor of each store mirrors the contents of its bookshelves as well. It features a lively reflection of contemporary social and cultural vibrations, with no preconceptions whatsoever. Recently opened in London, the new Taschen store is located on the Duke of York Square, right off the Kings Road, and consists of a ground floor bookstore and a basement floor gallery.
History of Taschen dates back to 1980 when Benedikt Taschen, 18 years old then, opened his first small shop in Cologne, selling mostly comics from his own huge collection. Art has always been his passion, yet art books, although widely available, were too expensive for most people to afford. Taschen's target and secret of success was high quality books for reasonable prices. First series of Taschen books, Basic Art, published in the end of 80s, were devoted to Picasso. The same formula - an attractive topic and a catching price - was further applied to vast variety of Taschen editions, spanning subjects from architecture and design to fashion, photography and lifestyle. Taschen, however, has set a record of the most expensive book of the 20th century as well. A gigantic Helmut Newton's photo album SUMO was once sold for 304 000 USD at a charity auction.
