Bookmarc

One of the most famous character traits of the American designer Marc Jacobs has always been his knack for seizing the moment: from his scandalous 1992 collection for the Perry Ellis fashion house, which essentially created the visual image of grunge, to offering the status of a guest designer of Louis Vuitton handbags to Takashi Murakami (a.k.a. 'the Japanese Warhol') in 2003 - a decision that caused quite a stir in the fashion and art circles alike. Espace Vuitton, the Louis Vuitton art gallery that has by now earned a spot of its own in the Paris culture scene, is Marc Jacobs' brainchild. Recently Jacobs added another unusual project to the list of his creative extravagances: September saw the Bookmarc bookstore open its doors in New York. In a way, though, Jacobs' new project could be considered as inevitable: books (particularly art and design books) are his weakness, and they are featured at all of his fashion stores. The Bookmarc collection seems to be selected with the ambitious approach of an art curator, rather than a traditional book seller: large part of the books was selected by Jacobs personally, paying special attention to rarities and collectibles alongside new publications. And then, of course, there are the art, design and photography almanacs which constitute Bookmarc's core. One of the walls is dedicated to biographies and classical New York publications; another has been painted red, white and blue by Jacobs, always the fashion designer. Alongside books, Bookmarc carries vinyl LPs, Bookmarc pencils, notebooks and even bags featuring covers of a variety of books.
