The Eugenia

Author: Ainārs Ērglis0 COMMENTS

For many Bangkok serves as a crossroads to some of the Thailand's favorite islands, like Krabi, Koh Samui and others. The vibrant metropolis of Thailand, however, holds lots of precious finds, making it worthwhile to stray there a little longer. The Eugenia, opened in 2006, is one of them. A small hotel with just 12 rooms is settled in a house presenting a true gem of the 19th century colonial style. Its owner Eugene Yeh, formerly from Taiwan, lives in Bangkok for some time already. The Eugenia's amazing ambience instantly enfolds, as soon as you step over its threshold. Rooms are appointed with antique furniture and fittings - patinated, a bit robust floors, an antique wooden writing table and a handmade brazen bathtub, adorning a bathroom. Only reminders of the 21st century are a hair dryer, hidden in a cotton bag, and wireless internet in every room. A refreshing swimming-pool is set in a cozy rear courtyard, while inside you can have a drink in a bar, decked out with hunting trophies - a wild cat's skin and buffalo's head among them. And that is not all - a huge, almost two meters long crocodile skin stretches out on an upstairs bench, while a stairway features an impressive collection of exotic bugs. A library hold a respectable stock of books and design magazines from almost all over the world but a small French style restaurant offers cross-cultural delicacies. Personnel tries to indulge every guest's wish and every detail is well thought out, including aromatic candles and crisp linen bedclothes. Plentiful breakfast is included in the price and can be chosen according to your taste in the evening. And that is not all! Icing on the cake are vintage sedans and limousines, offered to guests as well. The Eugenia possesses real treasures - a Daimler Limousine of 1970, several vintage Jaguars and S-Type 1965 among them. Airport transfer by a vintage Daimler limousine with wooden finish and a white livered chauffeur at its wheel has a special flavor. The Bangkok airport, with its entirely new and modern building being opened just last year, far outshines many of its European counterparts. Yet, the price for a trip like that is adequate - 1900 Bht for a Daimler and 1700 for a Jaguar (in comparison, taxi will take you to the airport for just 300 Bht; 1 dollar is 3.3 Bht)... yet, it is not a daily experience. By the way, the hotel Eugenia was inspired by the owner's muse - his 83-year-old Vietnamese lady friend, a woman with an exquisite sense of chic and style. The hotel is named in her honor, too.
