Ristorante Greppia and La Taverna del Mastino

Author: Laima Kaugure0 COMMENTS

Verona, without any doubt, can be called one of the most beautiful north Italian cities. Each stone here exudes ancient charm of long centuries - the Central Square, narrow streets and weather-worn walls of buildings. Nonetheless, a modern tourist fits well in this picturesque place, taking away almost nothing of its magic uniqueness.
Verona, with everything being within walking distance, each summer turns into the hub of opera enthusiasts. At the ancient amphitheatre or the Arena of Verona, dating back almost two thousand years, from June to August one can marvel at its historic magnificence under the sounds of opera music, including the famous Aida by Giuseppe Verdi. A special aura of the Arena, however, adds its air also to more up-to-date musical performances. A local rock and blues master Zucchero, considered to be the Italian version of Joe Cocker, performs here, too. Concerts of 52-year-old musician gather at the Arena most diverse audience - and both young and elderly hop up on their feet without hesitation to sing along aloud! And over and above - the event takes place in the ancient Roman amphitheatre! However brilliant a concert might be, half of the emotions aroused are thanks to the unique ambience of the Arena itself.
Verona retains its charm and loveliness in its daily life, too. Little local groceries seem inviting you to come again and again. And, indeed, in second time a holder helpfully suggests you the best products for your lunch or dinner. For example, which mozarella cheese would be the best choice, depending on when you intend to eat it - today or tomorrow? The same refers to wines - this wine is very good, yet, the other one might suit you a little better. Even in the end of a working day no one hurries to shut up a shop, serving till the very last customer instead. Moreover, Venetians do their job patiently and with never fading smile on their faces providing a fantastic service!

Ristorante Greppia

A classic Italian restaurant in the very heart of Verona. Nothing over-refined or snobbish and no high-end designer style in its interior either, yet you will find that traditional values are respected there - everything is elegant and neat. Ristorante Greppia, managed by Guizzardi family, is not an easy to find destination - only the locals can tell the way in the tangle of small streets of the historic centre of Verona. Inside of the restaurant slight resembles a canteen, therefore the best choice is to book a table outside - on the garden terrace or giardino.
At the Ristorante Greppia a characteristic Italian friendliness enfolds on every step. The head of the family shares the cozy atmosphere with his guests and a personalized attitude belongs to the charm of this place. And it goes without saying that you never have to express the same request twice - remembering wishes of clients is part of a good service there.
The place bubbles with lively voices and waiters hustle about, achieving a considerable speed and spicing up a meal they serve with a tasteful amount of good humor. „Here comes your panna cotta with tomatoes", announces a waiter, with a little sly smile on his face. And if you can pronounce a few words in Italian - a friendship is almost guaranteed! The restaurant's staff understands English, however, a reply, most likely, will follow in their native italiano...
The Ristorante Greppia is full of foreign guests, yet, it does not take away anything of its genuine ambience. Democratic prices (just 13 Euros for a main course!) are an explanation, too, why hungry tourists fidget restlessly at its door already at half past seven. Local gourmets, however, start to gather only around 9 p.m.
Fantastic fish dishes, pasta with spinach and homemade desserts. Panna cotta is perfect! From hors d'oeuvres the bravest ones may try some typical Verona's dishes, like horse sfilacci. While taste of marinated sardines triggers memories about grandma's fried pilchard, dipped in vinegar-onion marinade. Any complaints about the quality of wine or the amounts of servings would be irrelevant, too.
No dress code required, offering a great opportunity to slacken of one's rigid self-restraint and feel comfortable.

La Taverna del Mastino

A small tavern is located in a quiet side-street, just a couple of minutes walking distance from Ristorante Greppia. It is not easy at all to find a vacant table there - unless you have made a reservation at least a week in advance. Every night both La Taverna del Mastino halls are full of people and a cook, adorned in a white cap, slices huge chunk of Prosciutto ham, hanging like an appetizing decoration behind the bar. And it feels a bit in delicacy store...
Meat dishes, La Taverna del Mastino main specialty, are all equally delicious. In comparison with Ristorante Greppia that oozes democratic spirit, this place tends to be a connoisseur establishment - demanding gourmets gather to savor a huge variety appetizers and main dishes here. And prices, although slightly higher, are still pretty acceptable.
Italian waiters distinguish with their swiftness and competence, yet, unlike a conveyor-type attendance of enormous tourist flow in Venice or Sienna, La Taverna del Mastino offers sincere and personalized service. You may forget about strict dress code, too - a delicious meal can be savored in your favorite pair of jeans...
