Kruisherenhotel Maastricht

Author: Gundega Skudriņa0 COMMENTS

Some of you perhaps have pondered what it would be like to spend a night under lofty vaults of a church, being accidentally locked in, for example. In the Dutch city of Maastricht you can test what it tastes like without even going to any extremes. It's because a hotel is housed right in a former church!
Kruisherenhotel Maastricht occupies a Gothic church and a renovated 15th century monastery. Verticality is the most distinctive feature of Gothic buildings, bringing thus one's eyes closer to heaven and symbolically, closer to God. Staying there for sure is a truly heavenly experience!
Its décor presents an amazing synthesis of antiquity and ultramodernity, at the same time preserving a clear-cut distinction between the building's historic architectural value and nowadays.

Breakfasts are served in the central area, offering charming views of the city through the large chancel windows. Former side chapels now accommodate a cozy bar lounge while a glass elevator connects the church and the monastery. The hotel boasts an outstanding glass wine cellar, and guests can sip some wine in a tranquility of its wine bar. 60 fabulously designed, cozy and comfortable rooms are set in former cells. Even some sweets and small gifts are left there for little guests of the hotel.
It also features an impressive, modern library set in a stone wall. It holds books from across the world, and you can easily spend a whole day there.
The hotel is filled with light - it floods in through the original large church window and is supplemented by contemporary fixtures and glass interior solutions, making the whole space radiant and cozy. Lamps and other light installations are created by the German light installation artist Ingo Maurer, and are worth special attention.

A spirit of the former religious building can be sensed only through its architectural shape, while the personnel perhaps have long since forgotten that they actually work in a church.
Your stay at Kruisherenhotel Maastricht will definitely become a memorable experience. Without any doubt, it's a destination within itself!
