New York classics and flavours from burger eateries to glamrock bars

Author: Kerija Kalēja0 COMMENTS

Please Don't Tell
Please Don't Tell Bar embodies the very same free spirit as the entire St. Marks neighborhood with its all-pervading expressions of art, rock & roll, piercings and tattoos. It's one of the most hush-hush addresses of New York, disguised as a burger and hotdog eatery, accessible only through a phone booth and not before you pick up the receiver and dial a number.
Its features mirrors and black leather seats, while air of secrecy fills the place. The bar amazes with its peculiar selection of drinks, too, such as a peanut butter shake with an egg.
The space is very limited and reservations are a must.

Beauty Bar
Sited near Gramercy Park, there is a special New York address entitled Beauty Bar. You may presume that it's a cheapish hair salon at first glance, but as soon as you step over its threshold its irresistible charm surrounds you. It features an intriguing four-decades-old décor with chrome-plated hair-dryers above each table and chair, and till 11 pm ladies can get a Martini along with a manicure there! Or you can listen to DJ mixing music and hang out at the bar. Another room with a dance floor in the style of the 80s opens up after 11 pm. Choice of music never fails to amuse there (e.g., The Ting Tings) and makes you hop and dance till dawn.

Katz's Delicatessen
Katz's Delikatessen, located between Soho and Lower Eastside districts, serves exquisite and wickedly delicious sandwiches. It's one of the oldest of its kind in New York and upholds its high standards and impeccable cuisine ever since 1888. Networkers eagerly arrive there every day to have their daily meal and savor the great atmosphere. By the way, the famous orgasm scene with Meg Ryan in a romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally" was filmed at Katz's Delikatessen, too.

Eisenberg's sandwich shop
What would you say about a slogan "Raising New York's Cholesterol since 1929"? Quite provocative, isn't it? Are you hungry, by the way? Then go to Eisenberg's sandwich shop near the famous Flatiron Building. Enormous servings, creamy smoothies and mouth-watering egg and bacon sandwiches - a genuine taste of New York! C'mon in!

Serendipity 3
A café / restaurant Serendipity 3 is situated in the Upper East Side of New York. Although quite affordable for anyone, it has gained popularity among celebrities, too. It spreads over two floors with tables bearing names of famous people who once have sat there. Serendipity 3 is around since the mid-1950s. Perhaps you'll recognize the place also from the same name 2001 romantic comedy, starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale where their heroes Jonathan and Sarah were eating ice-cream there. Serendipity is renowned for its trademark Frozen Hot Chocolate - a huge serving of sinfully delicious hot chocolate like you have never tried before, made according to a secret recipe.
Allow time for queuing up despite of reservations made ahead of time.

Tu Lu's Bakery
Tu Lu's gluten-free bakery is small and modern. Perhaps it's not worth staying there too long, but its exceptionally delicious muffins, cookies, pastries or vegan-friendly agave brownies definitely are worth taking with you to savor them in a nearby square on 11th street between 1st and 2nd avenue.

Apotheke
Apotheke is a specialty cocktail bar or, to put it more precisely, a laboratory for cocktail creation with its own school and mixology gurus. Only very particular spirits and organic ingredients are being used there. Its décor inspired by the 19th century Paris goes well together with a cocktail named Heart of Gold, for example. This concoction of house-made passion fruit puree, vodka, vanilla cognac and ground vanilla bean may easily entice you into trying something else, too.

The Box
It may turn out to be the most daring club that you have ever visited. Its program comprises burlesque and vaudeville type shows and much more, ranging from exquisite to some truly shocking performances. Be ready for something very seductive and even something reaching far beyond that...The entrance policy is very strict there, yet, once you are inside, it's definitely worth giving the devil your little finger.

Webster Hall / Hanky Panky
Webster Hall is a concert venue - Webster Hall Studio offers its stage to less known performers, while the big hall is given to those who have earned some recognition already. The most intriguing area is its top floor VIP lounge, however, called Hanky Panky.
If someone thinks that rock & roll is dead or that 80's glam rock is history, it is capable of proving the opposite! Not dead, but more than alive, in fact, and Hanky Panky Wednesday night parties prove that! Costumes, music videos and the very atmosphere seems bringing back the very essence of that time!

Union Pool
A very epicenter of hipster culture! Union Pool, located in Brooklyn, features an inside bar and a large patio beyond it, which houses El Diablo Taco Truck - a place for outdoor eating and entertainment. Deejays, live music, photo sessions, eating, drinking and dancing, just name it! And that's the way it rolls on all year round!

Free love flourished there and it was a cradle of pop culture, innovation, women's emancipation and gender equality. It has produced many bright names on art, music and literature scene. Looking at houses entwined with verdant trees there makes you forget that you are in the city of towering skyscrapers.
