How difficult it is to speak about a city which has been filmed, photographed, fêted, painted and sung about so often! But I mustn't be afraid of clichés.
Paris is a city close to my heart. And, as the famous song J'ai Deux Amours suggests, Paris is indeed a love affair. You could be very far away from home but once you are back in Paris, one thing is perfectly clear: this is the city where you will always return and which you will never forget. Its unique beauty and charm warm up your soul and help you make your feelings more beautiful. Of course, it is a huge city with its own difficulties, and sometimes the load of our common life seems just too heavy - but we have to recognise one thing: Paris possesses an enlightening magic. Just take a walk along the streets at any time, day or night: enjoy the sky with your beloved, feel the soul of the city, and you will get that very special Parisian atmosphere .You won't have to spend much time in this city before you see the meaning of the words in the lyrics: «I have two loves, Paris and my homeland».

What I like in Paris is this perfect balance between the feeling of freedom which only a big city can give you and the charm of the quartiers, a web of different cosmopolitan villages, each with a flavour and identity of its own, which is exactly what makes Paris so special.
A word of advice: try and stop thinking of Paris as a tourist destination. If you don't get to see one landmark or another on this trip, don't worry: it will still be there next time. Instead, take your time, go for a walk and look around you: open yourself, soak up everything that surrounds you.
As any Parisian, I have my own beloved district. I live in the 9th Arrondissement . So let me introduce you to a few gems from mon quartier.

Of course I can not avoid mentioning the splendid Opéra Garnier (www.operadeparis.fr), Place de l'Opéra, a symbol of the II Empire style. The foundation stone was laid in 1861, followed by the start of construction in 1862. Legend has it that the Emperor's wife, the Empress Eugenie asked the architect Garnier during the construction as to whether or not the building would be built in the Greek or Roman style, to which he replied: "It is in the Napoleon III style, Madame!". The extravagance and the climate of mystery of this building inspired The Phantom of the Opera, the gothic novel by Gaston Leroux.

Less known to foreigners but no less important in the entertainment history of Paris is Les Folies Bergère (www.foliesbergere.com). I live very near to this ancient temple of the French music-hall, a gem of the Art Déco style.
Located at 32 Rue Richer, it opened on May 1869 as Folies Trévise, with fare including operettas, comic opera, popular song, and gymnastics. The Duke de Trévise, a prominent nobleman, did not want people to think that he was associated with a bawdy dance hall. As a result, it was renamed Folies Bergère after another nearby street, the Rue Bergère ("she-shepherd"). The Folies Bergère catered to popular taste. Shows featured elaborate costumes; the women's were frequently revealing. Joséphine Baker, an Afro-American expatriate singer, dancer, and entertainer, became an "overnight sensation" at the Folies Bergère in 1926 with her suggestive "banana dance", for which she wore a skirt made of bananas (and little else). The writers Maupassant, Colette, the actors Charlie Chaplin, WC Fields and many others have their name related with the destiny of Les Folies Bergère.

Another temple of entertainment is L'Olympia (www.olympiahall.com), a music hall situated at 28 Boulevard des Capucines. Founded by the creator of the Moulin Rouge cabaret in 1888, Olympia is the oldest music hall in Paris. It opened in 1889 as Montagnes Russes but was renamed Olympia in 1893. In February 1954, Bruno Coquatrix revived it as a music hall with a grand re-opening. Edith Piaf, La Môme, achieved great fame at the Olympia with several series of recitals between January 1955 and October 1962; her record Live at Olympia is considered as one of her best moment in her career. The singers Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, Barbara (my beloved singer), Joe Dassin, all these huge stars of French popular music, gave legendary concerts on this stage. It is also the venue where big international names like Judy Garland (Live in Paris 1960), the great Portuguese singer Amalia Rodrigues, jazz singer Nina Simone, The Shadows, The Beatles, Otis Redding and many others have performed to a full house and ecstatic critical acclaim.

To conclude this nostalgic promenade through my 9th arrondissement, immerse yourself into the very spirit of Paris: allow yourself to get lost in the memorable Passages Parisiens (www.passagesetgaleries.org). These covered shopping galleries were built in the early 1800s as part of Paris before its extension in 1860 near the Grands Boulevards, which were at the time the centre of Paris entertainment. Those commercial galleries were very well known from all the Parisians; it was the main shopping arcade before the competitors - Les Grands Magasins, Galerie Lafayette and Le Printemps - came along.

But even today, if you want to be seduced by the spirit of Paris, do visit these Galleries: Passage Verdeau and Jouffroy (1847) with all its antique shops, art bookshops and the photo shop which opened its doors in 190; reward yourself after the promenade with a chocolate or sucrerie in the exquisite gastronomy shop outside the gallery at 35 Rue du Faubourg Montmartre, founded in 1761 - A la Mère de Famille (www.lameredefamille.com). Then you will have more than just two loves - your homeland, Paris and the unforgettable sweets.
