Holon Design Museum
The Holon Design museum in Israel opened its doors to public on March 4. It is the first large-scale project of the Tel Aviv-born London-based architect, industrial designer and sculptor, Ron Arad. Indisputably, Arad is one of the brightest and most influential figures on the contemporary design scene, famous for his experimenting and pushing the boundaries. His works have been displayed at numerous architectural biennials, design fairs and art galleries. A major retrospective, covering more than 30 years of his creative career was presented in 2009 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, while an exhibition, named Ron Arad: Restless is still on display at London Barbican centre.
The new museum, located in Holon, close to Tel Aviv, has been commissioned by the city municipality aiming to transform the city of Holon into an epicenter of Israelis culture, art and education. The museum building features a sculptural form, constructed of five sinuous steel bands and offers visitors a unique spatial and optical experience. It can be entered both from the outside, giving a chance to marvel at its curved shape, or down the air-conditioned staircase through the lobby. The museum consists of two main galleries (750 m²) and several alternative exhibition spaces.
Its inaugural exhibition The State of Things features more than 100 objects, collectively reflecting the current issues concerning contemporary design viewed from the aspect of functionalism, consumerism and cultural impact. A special section is devoted to crucial topic of social insecurity in the era of instability and extreme, unpredictable changes - economic conditions, whims of nature, individual lifestyles and human relationships, not to mention wars and global catastrophes.
