Auroville is yet another creative village, situated 2 hours drive from Cholamandal Artists' Village and bringing together people of goodwill from everywhere. Located by the ocean, Auroville experimental village, designed by French Architect Roger Anger, was inaugurated in 1968. Its utopian concept has endured the test of time and survived till nowadays. Auroville community has flourished, much like the once newly planted trees, and nowadays has become home to about 2200 people from India and 43 other countries across the world. The village is divided into several zones, representing essential activities of people providing for the needs of the entire community. Surrounded by beautiful nature, lives of people flow without haste or hurry there - they design clothes, occupy themselves with arts and crafts, practice yoga and quietly move around on their scooters. In the middle of the village there is sphere- shaped temple, called Matrimandir. A Latvian painter Anita Arbidāne, too, has spent few months in Auroville, painting and experiencing its somewhat hippie-like lifestyle, while the resulting artworks were presented at India Art Fair - India Art Summit 2011.
