Stubai glacier or Königreich des Schnees resort is located about an hour and a half drive from Innsbruck and is one of the most favorite snow-lovers destinations in Tyrol. If the weather is good and there is plenty of snow, it can be quite crowded there. Numerous tourist buses from Germany bring more and more seekers of fresh snow. It's very valuable to know a local snowboard instructor who is familiar with the place inside out and can take you to special spots that you would never find on your own - off the regular routs and away from crowds of people. A fantastic free-ride in the length of 8 km down to the very foot with fresh snow all along the way! It's like a dessert that you would save for the end of the day when the sun is almost setting.
A glacier has its peculiarities, however. Deep crevices may form in the process of melting, and they can be well observed while going up to the highest point (3210m). Greenish-blue ice has deep gaps in it - a pretty scary sight, especially knowing that a slightest slip can have a fatal outcome. Under thick snow, crevices can stay unnoticed, making it very dangerous to go there alone, especially for a first-timer.
