If anything can tempt a snowboarding enthusiast enough to forego a downhill rush in powder snow, in perfect weather, it must be something VERY special. Bamap is definitely one of the most amazing après-ski places in the Alps; I haven't been lucky enough to find anything even remotely similar anywhere else: a truncated mountain summit at the height of 2106 metres with a breathtaking view of the Alpine slopes, traditional Austrian crosses scattered in the distance. Bamap, a two-storey cafe and resting place, sucks you in instantly; everything is built from wood and even the external walls are sliding ones! Exactly: should there be a lack of sunlight on a fine day, no-one will bother to open a window - they will just push a wall aside... In spite of the fact that the majority of the Balmap crowd are foreigners, the atmosphere is very enjoyable. Outside they are playing vinyl records: there is this feeling that time has stopped. Practically half of the staff have come to work here from abroad. And don't be surprised to find out that a waiter is doubling as a ski instructor. This is more of a lifestyle than a job: once you are here, you just stay put and enjoy yourself. Balmap is accessible only to people who own snowboarding or skiing maps - which means anyone who is here to pursue the joys of winter. It does seem a bit mean to set up something as good as this in a practically inaccessible location. When you finally reach the place, the luxurious overwhelming feeling of comfort keeps you from doing the one thing for which you have come such a long way. And, as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, why not? Admittedly, the meal does not knock your socks off with any extras; the menu mostly offers simple yet delicious fare, easy and quick to prepare, including the traditional goulash soup.
