Wiener Staatsoper

Wiener Staatsoper

The Vienna State Opera - it is a gem of Romantic Historicism, excellent singers and top musical level of the performances. The Wiener Philharmoniker, the company's orchestra, is definitely one of the world's greatest musical ensembles.
For eighteen years (1992-2010) the artistic 'face' of the Vienna Opera was defined by the general director Ioan Holender, the longest serving administrator in the history of the company, easily surpassing his famous predecessors Herbert von Karajan and Gustav Mahler. During Holender's tenure, Wiener Staatsoper definitely did not develop into a company known for radical stage interpretations; it is defined by its brand of consistent conservativism which finds some productions dating back forty years good enough for today. The single leading role at the Vienna State Opera is played by music - music of the highest quality.
