Owners of the excellent Estonian Pädaste Manor resort on Muhu Island just off the coast of Estonia in the Baltic Sea have now conquered the mainland too, bringing their entrepreneurial knack and the island's seasonal cuisine with them! Much favored by foodies, Neh Restaurant is located a short walk from the Old City, amidst the 19th century warehouse buildings near Tallinn's port, the area dubbed "Holland" due to its canals, streams and the historical Härjapea River.
Since 2008, these premises housed Tam Gallery, which now is moved up above the two-storey restaurant and continues to display and sell local Estonian art.
Neh features a roughish rustic décor with pleasant patina of age - wooden flooring, naked brick walls, wooden tables and chairs. On the other hand, it boasts an advanced online booking system and a use of modern technologies in the kitchen, too. Its four cooks communicate among themselves via wireless intercom system, which allows providing quick and dynamic service.
Neh kitchen is small yet efficiently organized, which you can see with your own eyes if you opt for a diner at the Chefs' table - a hot spot of the restaurant both in the literal and figurative sense! A small company of up to five people can have a relaxed meal while immersed in the bubbling and steaming atmosphere of the kitchen. Moreover, you can expect complimentary treats and tidbits and feel very much like a bear with a honey pot during the entire evening!
Neh menu, like the restaurant itself, is quite small. Do not expect any huge culinary marvels, yet decent and delicious fare is guaranteed. Focused on Nordic Islands' cuisine, it uses fresh, seasonal products from Estonia and around it - lamb, pork, venison, moose and wild boar, as well as fish, vegetables, honey, mushrooms and berries.
For example, what would you say about delicious flatfish served with brown butter? Ordering a whole fish, you can choose its size as well! Or else, a herring terrine, served in a charming rustic wooden bowl, with local fish straight from the waters near the Muhu Island! Or perhaps, a nourishing pea soup served with two slices of smoked meat and two more of black rye bread? Worth trying and incredibly tasty is also veal cheeks on top of layers of potatoes and celery, pearl-barley risotto with beet roots, meat and rich gravy! All of the above mentioned is topped with a traditional cheese cake with sea buckthorn from Pädaste neighborhood and plum gem from manor house cellar or Neh very own, home-made ice-cream!
